About the Faculty

The Faculty of Foreign Languages of Yerevan Gladzor University was established in 1991, since the very foundation of YGU.

The faculty includes the Chair of Foreign Languages (currently renamed as Chair of Languages), which was initially headed by A. Sh. Tarverdyan. Subsequently, it was led by I. H. Aydinyan, Associate Professor, until 2001; from 2001 to 2005, by L. H. Hovhannisyan, PhD in Philology; from 2005 to 2009, by L. Antonyan, PhD in Philology; in 2009, by E. T. Minasyan, PhD in Philology; and from 2010 to 2011, by G. R. Gasparyan, Doctor of Philology, Professor.

Since 2012, the Chair has been headed by Lilit Serzhik Sahakyan, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor.

The Chair's activities are governed by the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the resolutions of the University’s Academic Council, the Chair’s Charter, semester work plans, as well as other internal regulatory documents.

Since the 2006-2007 academic year, alongside the specialization in “Foreign Language and Literature”, the specialization in “Translation Studies” has also been offered.

Since the 2003-2004 academic year, the Faculty of Foreign Languages has transitioned to a three-tier system of higher education. Since 2007, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) has been implemented.

In line with these reforms, the academic curricula for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the specializations of “Foreign Language and Literature” and “Translation Studies” have been accordingly developed.

Additionally, academic and methodological packages have been revised to correspond with the principles of the Bologna Process. These packages incorporate all contemporary components required for the input and output levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Scientific research activities within the faculty are centralized in the Chair of Languages, which is responsible for the conduct and coordination of research projects.

The faculty places significant emphasis on the role of its well-equipped and comfortable language laboratories and smart classrooms. These facilities contribute greatly to the teaching of foreign languages—namely English, Russian, French, German, and Turkish—by improving students’ pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, as well as oral communication skills.

These include intra-chair academic seminars, international academic forums, and international academic and practical conferences in collaboration with partner universities abroad. The Chair also arranges workshops and training sessions for the Chair’s foreign language lecturers as well as foreign language instructors from partner schools and colleges. Joint inter-university and international online training programs are regularly held for Armenian specialists in English language. Additionally, the Chair organizes and conducts inter-chair final open-door classes, as well as invited English-language lectures and masterclasses—delivered both in person and online—and film screenings followed by discussions for students from various academic disciplines across the University.

Educational programs

The Chair has developed Bachelor's and Master's degree programs aligned with the current academic specializations offered by the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Yerevan Gladzor University. Within the relevant academic curricula for the current specializations, the course syllabi for both core and specialization-specific courses—whether compulsory or elective—are structured in a clearly defined format. These syllabi incorporate all the essential modern components, including: a general course overview, course description, objectives and learning outcomes, expected competencies, teaching methodologies, course policies, assessment methods, course workload, thematic breakdown by semester, academic calendar, detailed course description, and exam questionnaires. The course syllabi are developed by the faculty members of the Chair (either individually or through collaborative efforts), taking into account the policy of aligning the programs with equivalent curricula offered by local and international institutions. The syllabi are reviewed annually and updated based on the experience of the previous academic year, as well as the results of anonymous student surveys conducted at the end of each course.
