About the Faculty

The Faculty of Foreign Languages (hereinafter FFL) of Yerevan Gladzor University (hereinafter YGU) was established in 1991, since the very foundation of YGU. The first Head of the Chair of FFL was A. Sh. Tarverdyan. Later the Chair was headed by I. H. Aidinyan (till 2001), l. H. Hovhannisyan, PhD (2001 - 2005), L. A. Antonyan, PhD (2005-2009), E.T. Minasyan, PhD (2009-2010) and G.R. Gasparyan, Dr, Professor (2010-2011). Since 2012, Lilit S. Sahakyan, PhD, Associate Professor, has been fulfilling the responsibilities and obligations of the Head of the Chair of FFL.

For organizing its activities efficiently and systematized, the Chair of Foreign Languages acts under the resolutions of the RA Ministry of Education and Science, the rulings of YGU Academic Council, the FFL Chair Charter, semester acting plans and other internal regulatory documents.

Since 2006-2007 academic year, the Chair of FFL has commenced training students in ''Translation Studies'' specialization in parallel with the specialization of ''Foreign languages and literature''.

Since 2003-2004 academic year, FFL has shifted into a three-tier education system (undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses), and since 2007-2008 academic year, a credit accumulation and transfer system has been introduced. In compliance with these changes, accordingly have been newly designed both undergraduate and graduate academic plans of "Foreign Language and Literature" and "Translation Studies" specializations. In addition, in accordance with the Bologna Process, all educational-methodological packages and course guides have been amended, and currently they include all up-to-date input and output components required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The Chair staff carries out a variety of scientific and educational activities. The professional lecturers of the Chair of Foreign Languages provide theoretical knowledge in different scientific fields, as well as practical English both as major and minor subjects.

Due attention is given to well-equipped language halls and smart rooms meant for listening activities and movie screenings with an objective to improve students’ intonation, pronunciation, to enlarge their word-stock and enhance communication skills of foreign languages (English, Russian, French, German and Turkish).

Collaboration

The Department of Foreign Language of Gladzor University cooperates with Yerevan State University, U.S., French and German Embassies in Armenia, Armenian Schools, British Council Armenia, American Corner Yerevan, American Councils (ACCELS) MANMAR, with Peace Corps, Armenian Volunteer Network (AMVN), the USA) and other organizations. Yerevan “Gladzor” University cooperates with YSU in the organization of state qualification exams and research, jointly participates in the activities of the Professional Council “German Languages” Z.02.07, international scientific educational programs, international conferences, scientific seminars. Cooperation with public schools of the Republic has always been considered one of the most important areas of work of the Department of Foreign Languages of the EEC. For many years, students of the specialty of Foreign Language and Literature of our University have been conducting their pedagogical practice in E. Charents No. 67 with advanced teaching of English in secondary schools and regional general education institutions.

Events

The Chair of Languages, in accordance with the approved annual work plan of the Chair, a pre-established schedule for holding intrauniversity and extracurricular events, in accordance with the research strategy of the Chair, organizes and conducts intra-departmental scientific seminars, international scientific forums every semester, international scientific-practical conferences with cooperating universities abroad, workshop-trainings for teachers of foreign languages of the department and teachers of foreign languages of cooperating schools and colleges, interuniversity-international joint online trainings for Armenian specialists in English, as well as interdepartmental summary open classes and invited English face-to-face or online lecture-master classes and film screening - discussions for students of various specialties of the university.

Educational programs

The Department of Professions at the Faculty of Foreign Language of the EEC has developed educational programs for bachelor's and master's degree. Subject programs of general professional and specialization courses, both compulsory and optional, included in the relevant curricula for existing specialties have a clearly defined structure, including all required modern components: general description of the course, description of the subject, purpose and objectives of the course, expectations of the course, methods of implementation, policy, evaluation system, training volume, thematic distribution by semesters, calendar plan, course description and questionnaires. Subject programs are compiled by the teaching staff of the department (independently or as a result of teamwork), taking into account the coherence with the given educational programs of other local and international institutions the policy to create, reviewed once a year, is updated taking into account the experience of the previous year and the results of anonymous surveys conducted among students at the end of the course.
