About the Faculty

The Faculty of Economics at Yerevan Gladzor University was established in 1991 and included the Chair of General Economics. The first Chairperson was Lukashen Hovakim Badanyan, PhD in Economics, Professor from 1992 till 1993, followed by Hovhannes Karapet Hovhannisyan, PhD in Economics, Professor from 1993 till 2001.

From 2001 till 2019, the Chair was led by Khoren Albert Mkhitaryan, PhD in Economics, Professor, with short terms of leadership by Bakur V. Martirosyan, PhD in Economics, (2019–2020) and Sergey S. Sukiasyan, Doctor of Economics, Professor, (2020–2021). Since 2021, Khoren Albert Mkhitaryan, PhD in Economics, Professor has resumed his position as the Chairperson of the Chair.

Since the 2004–2005 academic year, the Faculty of Economics has transitioned to a three-tier educational system, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Postgraduate (PhD) programs.

Since 2007, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) has been implemented.

Since the 2007–2008 academic year, a part-time program has been available within the Faculty of Economics, with a duration of five years.

The Chair's activities are governed by the regulations of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the resolutions of the University’s Academic Council, the Chair’s Charter, semester work plans, as well as other internal regulatory documents.

Academic and Administrative Staff To achieve the Chair’s strategic goals and to ensure the learning outcomes defined by the professional educational program, the Chair has been and continues to be consistently enhanced with doctors of sciences, professors, associate professors, PhD candidates, as well as leading specialists in their respective fields. As of 2015, the Chair is staffed by 13 faculty members engaged in teaching activities.

Collaboration

Events

The Chair of General Economics organizes and conducts academic seminars on a monthly basis, following a pre-established schedule aligned with the Chair’s unified research strategy and thematic agenda. Regular meetings are held with distinguished representatives and leading professionals in the field to familiarize students with current developments and achievements in the sector, alongside their academic studies. In addition, study visits to the Central Bank and other relevant institutions are organized on a regular basis, providing students with practical insights into the workings of economic and financial systems.

    The Chair of General Economics has developed Bachelor's and Master's degree programs aligned with the current academic specializations offered by the Faculty of Economics at Yerevan Gladzor University. Within the relevant academic curricula for the current specializations, the course syllabi for both core and specialization-specific courses—whether compulsory or elective—are structured in a clearly defined format. These syllabi incorporate all the essential modern components, including: a general course overview, course description, objectives and learning outcomes, expected competencies, teaching methodologies, course policies, assessment methods, course workload, thematic breakdown by semester, academic calendar, detailed course description, and exam questionnaires. The course syllabi are developed by the faculty members of the Chair (either individually or through collaborative efforts), taking into account the policy of aligning the programs with equivalent curricula offered by local and international institutions. The syllabi are reviewed annually and updated based on the experience of the previous academic year, as well as the results of anonymous student surveys conducted at the end of each course.
