About the Faculty

The Faculty of Law at Yerevan Gladzor University was established in 1990. Till1993, the faculty comprised two Chairs: the Chair of Political Science Disciplines, headed by Henrik Mkrtich Khachatryan, PhD in Law, Associate Professor, and the Chair of Criminological Disciplines, led by Robert Zaven Avagyan, PhD in Law, Associate Professor.

In 1993, with the aim of enhancing the efficiency and organizational structure of the faculty’s academic activities, a unified Chair of General Jurisprudence was established under the leadership of Artsrun Gurgen Edilyan.

From 1998 to 2000, the Chair was headed by Gurgen Haykaz Ayvazyan, PhD in Law, Associate Professor. From 2001 to 2002, the position was held by Mikayel Vakhtang Grigoryan, PhD in Law, Associate Professor, First Rank. State Counselor of Justice,

Since 2003, the responsibilities of the Chairperson of the Chair have been carried out by Zhora Daniel Jhangiryan, Doctorof Laws, Professor.

The Chair's activities are governed by the regulations of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, the resolutions of the University’s Academic Council, the Chair’s Charter, semester work plans, as well as other internal regulatory documents.

Since the 2006–2007 academic year, the faculty has adopted a three-tier education system, comprising Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Postgraduate (PhD) programs. Since 2007, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) has been implemented.

The Chair of General Jurisprudence is actively engaged in scholarly work. The faculty members regularly participate in YGU’s annual academic conferences for academic staff and postgraduate students. The scientific reports presented at these conferences are published in the annual collections of proceedings from the University’s academic conferences, featuring contributions from the University’s faculty members and postgraduate students.

The Chair has developed and published a wide range of academic literature, including textbooks, monographs, as well as educational and methodological manuals.

Students of the Faculty of Law have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice by organizing and participating in mock trials, acquiring skills in the organization and conduct of trials, as well as conducting expert examinations at the University’s Legal Clinic and Forensic Expertise Centre.

To achieve the Chair’s aims and objectives, and to ensure the successful implementation of its goals and the learning outcomes defined by the professional educational program in the specialty “Jurisprudence", the Chair has been and continues to be regularly enriched with doctors of sciences, professors, associate professors, and PhD Candidates. Practice-oriented courses are delivered by legal professionals actively working in the field. Currently, 30 lecturers are employed at the Chair of General Jurisprudence.

Collaboration

The Chair of General Jurisprudence organizes and conducts academic seminars on a monthly basis, in accordance with a pre-established schedule aligned with the Chair’s unified research strategy and thematic agenda.

The Chair of General Jurisprudence has developed Bachelor's and Master's degree programs aligned with the current academic specializations offered by the Faculty of Law at Yerevan Gladzor University.

Within the relevant academic curricula for the current specializations, the course syllabi for both core and specialization-specific courses—whether compulsory or elective—are structured in a clearly defined format. These syllabi incorporate all the essential modern components, including: a general course overview, course description, objectives and learning outcomes, expected competencies, teaching methodologies, course policies, assessment methods, course workload, thematic breakdown by semester, academic calendar, detailed course description, and exam questionnaires. The course syllabi are developed by the faculty members of the Chair (either individually or through collaborative efforts), taking into account the policy of aligning the programs with equivalent curricula offered by local and international institutions. The syllabi are reviewed annually and updated based on the experience of the previous academic year, as well as the results of anonymous student surveys conducted at the end of each course.
